 Structure of Simple Present Tense

Affirmative

subject + V1/V5+object

James eats rice

Negative

subject + does not/do not +VI + object

James does not eat rice.

Interrogative

subject + does not/do not +VI + object

Does James eat rice? What does James eat?

Passive

object + is/am/ are+V3+ by + subject

object + is/am/ are+V3+ by + subject

 

Uses of Simple Present Tense with examples:

(a) To express present affairs / permanent or long-lasting situation:

  He speaks English very well.

  A nurse works in a hospital.

 His father wears glasses.

 

(b) To express habitual actions or repeated actions / daily routine:

I always take tea in the morning.

Olivia walks to college every day.

When do you usually have lunch?

 He frequently takes bath.

 

(c) To express truth and facts or saying and proverb:

The sun sets early in the winter.

The Earth is a planet.

Honesty is the best policy.

 Slow and steady wins the race.

 

d)To express fixed timetable or scheduled future actions:

The meeting starts at four.

His father retires next year.

The match starts at 9 o' clock.

The train leaves at 5:20.

 

(e) We often use these adverbs of time in seldom rarely every day twice a week.

always, hardly, often, once a day, daily, sometimes, every week, thrice a month, occasionally, generally, every year, nowadays, frequently, scarcely 

 He always drinks coffee.

I often lose my temper.

She generally forgets duty.

 

(f) To express likes, dislikes/verbs of sensation / emotional states:

He hates talking like that.

That seems ok for me.

I love ice cream.

I think he is a good writer.
