An essay on "Native language is better than the English language" | A debate on "Native (Nepali) language is better than the English language"
Honourable Chairperson of the program, jury members, respected teachers, my fellow competitors, my beloved friends and junior brothers and sisters warm greetings to everyone. Today, its me (my name) from Grade 10 going to put my points for the topic “Native language is better than the English language”.
Note: The above paragraph is only necessary for the debate. If you are writing an essay you can avoid the first paragraph.
The Nepali language is originated from the Sanskrit language which is the oldest language in the world. It is a humble and respectful language. English has only “You” for the second person and “He, she, they” for the third person but you can find a lot in Nepali according to class and respect. For example, in the English language, “You” is used for juniors, elders, everyone but in the Nepali language there is “Tapai” for elders, “Timi” for the same level of respect or to juniors and “Ta” for the lowest term of respect.
Secondly, the native language is easier to learn. In fact, no effort is required in order to learn a native language. We learn it automatically. We learn it from toddler age listening to our mother, near ones and our surrounding. On the other hand, learning a foreign language like English requires a lot of effort. Moreover, it is very difficult to master the English language for a non-native speaker. No matter how hard one practices it is hard to develop accent and pronunciation like a native English speaker.
Thirdly, the importance of language depends on the location and surrounding of a person. For a native person, no language is better than his native language. For example, for a Nepali citizen, Nepali is more useful than English, for an Indian citizen Hindi is useful and for a Chinese citizen, Chinese is more useful. He/she has to use native language more than English in his/her country.
Furthermore, our culture and identity are linked to our language. Language is our identity and property. In course of learning the English language, one may also embrace English culture leaving his/her culture behind. Its effect is already seen in many places in the world and cannot be neglected. For example, Native words are replaced by English words. Own cultures, celebrations, festivals are forgotten and English festivals, cultures are embraced.
I would like to conclude my points by saying that no language is better than native language neither English nor any other foreign language.
