Present Continuous Tense - Structure and Uses

 Structure of Simple Present Continuous Tense

Affirmative

subject + is/am/are + V4+object

James is eating rice.

Negative

subject + is /am/ are + not +V4+object

James is not eating rice.

Interrogative

Is/Am/Are+subject + V4+object?

Wh+is/am/are + subject + V4+ object?

Is James eating rice?

 

What is James eating?

Passive

object + is/am/ are + being+V3+ by + subject

Rice is being eaten by James.


The Present Continuous tense is used:

(a) To express things happening now/at the moment:

ü What are you doing now?

ü  The boys are reading in the class.

ü  I am working on a new project.

ü  They are not standing in a queue.

 (b) To express future planned arrangements:

ü  They are arriving Jamesorrow.

ü  I am going to give an interview on June 20.

ü  Is he visiting his parents next week?

(c) Expressions like: Stop, Listen, Look, Don't make a noise, Don't disturb which draw attention:

ü  Look! The bus is coming.

ü  Listen! The dog is barking.

ü  Don't disturb me. I'm reading.

(d) Gradual change:

ü  The children are growing fast.

ü  The price of land is rising rapidly.

(e) After but today / but now:

ü  He always play tennis but today he is playing baseball.

ü  I always drink tea but now I'm drinking coffee.

 

(f) In these adverbs of time: now, still, this week, this month, at present, currently , at the moment, at this time.

ü  You are not swimming now.

ü  I am resting at the moment.

ü  They are reading at present.
